Pondexter was taken with the 26th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. After a month, the New Orleans Hornets acquired Pondexter and Craig Brackins.
Before the start of the 2011-12 NBA season, the Hornets traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies. After two years with the Grizzlies, he signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the franchise in 2013. Pondexter appeared in 189 games in his first three NBA seasons. During the 2013-14 NBA season, however, he suffered an injury to his right leg and was forced to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery in December. Pondexter returned for the 2014-15 season, spending the first two months with the Grizzlies.
