British historian Paul Michael Kennedy CBE FBA is an expert in the history of international relations, economic power, and grand strategy. He is the author of a number of well-known books on the development of British foreign policy and conflicts between superpowers.

Paul Kennedy attended St. Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle after growing up in Wallsend, Northumberland. Then, under the direction of A. J. P. Taylor and John Andrew Gallagher, he received his Ph.D. from St. Antony’s College in Oxford after graduating from Newcastle University with first-class honors in history.
He worked in the history department at the University of East Anglia from 1970 to 1983. He is a Royal Historical Society Scholar and has held visiting fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. From 2007 to 2008, Kennedy held the position of Phillipe Roman Professor of History and International Affairs at the London School of Economics.

In 1983, he was named Yale’s J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of British History. He is currently the Director of International Security Studies, where he instructs Charles Hill and John Lewis Gaddis in their Studies in Grand Strategy course.
In 2012, Professor Kennedy expanded on his portrayal of military history as being closely tied to economic power and technological advancement by presenting “Military History of the West Since 1500” at Yale.
His best-known book, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, explores the historical connection between economics and strategy.
A. J. P. Taylor and Sir Michael Howard, two fellow historians, lauded the work, describing it as “an encyclopedia in itself” and “a truly humanistic book in the very greatest sense of the word.” 23 additional languages have had it translated.
In his 2006 book The Parliament of Man, Kennedy examines the past and future of the UN.
