The journalist was raised in Fitchburg after being born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on October 13, 1943. Sgt. Detective Paul Barnicle, a Vietnam War veteran, lost his fight with cancer on August 13, 2018, according to Barnacle.
The 77-year-old began his professional career as a writer in 1965 and has continued to this day. He completed his studies at Boston University in Massachusetts in 1965.

However, when working for Boston Globe Media, he was accused of plagiarism just as his name was beginning to gain popularity and recognition. After the editors were unable to verify the presence of two cancer-stricken boys that Barnicle wrote about in a touching 1995 column, he was suspended.
After admitting that he had never spoken to either of the cancer victims’ families, the journalist was later suspended for a month and ultimately quit his job in 1998.
