It’s a Family Thing

The LaFleur family has a long history of coaching. Matt’s parents were also involved in the coaching industry.

Physical education classes were taught by Denny and Kristi LaFleur. Up until their retirement in 2015, they worked as coaches at Mount Pleasant High School in their native Michigan.

Additionally, in 2017 they served as the grand marshals of the homecoming procession at Mount Pleasant High School.

At Central Michigan University, Denny worked as a defensive assistant for a very long time. In the 1970s, he also played linebacker for Michigan.

Matt played football with his father for hours at a time. He used to observe the game with Denny.

In a previous interview, Denny claimed that his elder child had collegiate experience from a young age because he accompanied his father to all of the home games, away games, and bowl games.

Kristi, Matt’s mother, instilled optimism in him. She used to support her spouse on the sidelines when he played.

In actuality, she was Mount Pleasant High’s competitive cheerleading coach. She had a reputation for taking untrained children and molding them into teams that would consistently advance to the state championships.

Playing Career of Matt LaFleur

From 1998 to 1999, LaFleur attended Western Michigan University. While attending classes there, he was a wide receiver.

Later, in 2000, he changed schools to Saginaw Valley State.

In 2000, LaFleur began playing quarterback, and he did so up until 2002.

He briefly played for the Omaha Beef in the National Indoor Football League. He was the quarterback’s backup.

The next summer, Matt joined the Montana Billings Outlaws.

In 2003, LaFleur began working as a coach at Saginaw Valley State, where he had previously played and studied.

He was a graduate assistant on offense. In the nearby high schools, he also worked as a substitute teacher, mainly teaching arithmetic.

LaFleur then moved to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to work as an offensive assistant at Central Michigan University in 2004 and 2005.

In 2006, he began working as a quarterback and receivers coach at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
