Mark was born on 25 January 1966 in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S. He was born to parents named Herb Schlereth (father) and Janette Schlereth (mother) (mother).

When he was young, he struggled with dyslexia, and as a result, he did not learn how to read until he was seven years old. In 1984, he graduated from Robert Service High School.

Mark accepted the University of Idaho scholarship offer from head coach Dennis Erickson.
Following Erickson’s departure in 1985, Mark began playing for new head coach Keith Gilbertson at left guard on the Vandals’ offensive line, blocking for quarterbacks Scott Linehan and John Friesz.
In 1988, the Vandals advanced to the national semifinals, and he was named second-team all-Big Sky.
He was inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Mark was inducted into the Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame at the University of Idaho in 2008.
Professional Development
The Washington Redskins selected Mark in the tenth round (#263 overall) of the 1989 NFL draft.
He has appeared in twelve NFL seasons, six of which he spent with the Denver Broncos (1995-2000).
Mark was a member of one Super Bowl championship team with the Washington Redskins and two with the Denver Broncos.
He was then named to the Pro Bowl for his performances in 1991 and 1998.
His former Redskins teammates call him “Stink” about stink heads, an Eskimo delicacy made from rotting fish heads.
Mark contributed to the Broncos’ 31-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII on January 25, 1998, which also happened to be his 32nd birthday.
Mark was injured several times during his playing career and had twenty-nine surgeries. His left knee required 15 surgeries, while his right knee required only five.
All of Mark’s injuries were documented on the sports medicine television show Athlete 360, which was hosted by Mark’s former Redskins teammate Dr. Mark Adickes.
In 2006, he was inducted into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame, and in 2008, he was inducted into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.

Following Football
On April 18, 2001, Schlereth announced his retirement. He declared
“I came out here today to announce that I have signed a six-year, $42 million contract extension with the Denver Broncos.”
The truth is that after my 15th operation on my left knee last November, it became painfully clear that I couldn’t sign a six-year contract for $42 in Tupperware.
In the last three months of free agency, I realized there isn’t much of a market for a 6 ft 3 in [1.91 m], 245-pound [111 kg] guard who is 35 years old and beaten to a pulp.”
He co-hosted an afternoon sports talk radio show on Denver AM radio 760 The Zone with fellow former Broncos lineman David “Doc” Diaz-Infante.
During this time, he worked as a part-time ESPN analyst. In 2004, he left 760 to work full-time for ESPN. He worked as an analyst for NFL Live and SportsCenter from 2004 to 2017.
Following that,
Mark switched from ESPN to Fox Sports on July 11, 2017. Fox Sports was in turmoil, having fired Jamie Horowitz just a week before due to a reported sexual harassment investigation.
Nonetheless, he made a move and made his Fox Sports 1 debut by appearing on “Undisputed” with Skip Bayless and his former Broncos teammate Shannon Sharpe.
Since 2017, Mark has been a color commentator for Fox NFL games with Adam Amin on the #3 team.
He also co-hosts a radio show on Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan in Denver. He also works as an analyst for the FS1 television network.
