Luka was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on February 28, 1999. He is the son of basketball coach and former player Sasa Doncic (father) and beauty salon owner Mirjam Poterbin (mother).

Luka began practicing with 11-year-old players at the invitation of Olimpija Basketball School coach Grega Brezovec when he was only eight years old.

2018-2019 Dallas Mavericks
The Atlanta Hawks selected Luka as the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018. Later, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He signed his rookie contract with the Dallas Mavericks on July 9, 2018.
Luka made his season debut on October 17, 2018, against the Phoenix Suns, scoring 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
