According to his biography, Leon Harris was born in Akron, Ohio, on April 20, 1961. His mother Lorraine and father Leon Sr. encouraged him to pursue his goals as he was growing up. He was lovingly raised with his sister Kimberly, his three brothers Marcus, Jerry, and J.J., and his sister.
In 1979, Leon, now 57 years old, graduated from Buchtel High School. He received an Ohio University National Merit Scholarship. He studied communications at Ohio University and received a cum laude diploma. In 1999, he also obtained an honorary doctorate.

His career was launched with CNN. In the 1980s, he was able to work in the global headquarters. He had been an unpaid intern there, but he had learned a lot from that experience. He eventually went on to work as a video journalist before rising to the position of assistant director. He accepted the position and was in charge of negotiating and overseeing satellite services that are utilized to cover major events.
