Career

Lauren ran unopposed for Florida’s 32nd Senate District in 2016. Confederate Memorial Day is honored on April 26, 2017, and Book sponsored legislation to remove it from Florida’s list of 21 lawful holidays during the 2017 legislative session.
Lauren requested an investigation into the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office’s handling of a work release program for Jeffrey Epstein, a registered sex offender who was found guilty of soliciting young prostitutes in 2008–2009, in a letter to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dated July 22, 2019. She claimed to have received calls from Ric Bradshaw’s political backers asking with her to rescind her request for an investigation.
The Democratic caucus unanimously chose Lauren to be their next Senate leader for the 2022–24 legislative session in the wake of Bobby Powell’s decision to run for office in Congress. On April 28, 2021, exactly one week after Gary Farmer’s leadership was ousted by a vote of no confidence, the Democratic caucus chose Book to be the minority leader.
