Kliff Kingsbury played quarterback for the varsity team all four years of high school. He subsequently went on to play college football. He competed at the collegiate level for Spike Dykes from 1998 to 1999. He also participated in the 2000–2002 Mike Leach team. He established 13 Big 12 Conference records and 39 school records.

Additionally, he set seven FBS NCAA records. Kliff was selected by the coaches to the first-team All-District and second-team All-Big 12 Conference teams in recognition of his remarkable performance. At the end of the 2002 season, he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the best collegiate passer in the country.

He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, where he placed ninth. He also received a scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He joined the New Orleans Saints on September 6, 2004, and played for them the whole 2004 season. He also participated in the Canadian Football League and NFL Europe. Kliff began working as a coach in 2008. Then, up until 2011, he was employed as a coach at the University of Houston.

He served as an offensive coach for Texas A&M’s previous head coach, Kevin Sumlin, for the 2012 campaign. Kliff returned to Texas Tech on December 12, 2012, serving as the school’s fifteenth full-time head coach. He has been a member of the Arizona Cardinals since 2019.
