His parents were shoe salesman Jack Glen Brown (also called Glen Jack Brown and Glenn Jack Brown) and housewife Virginia Grace (née Shupe) Brown. She started modeling when she was 14 and got a contract with MGM. On the set, she finished high school.
In 1940, her family moved to Los Angeles, where she had Larry Vernon Loveland, her half-brother, Tammera Loveland, and Kim Loveland, her stepsister and stepbrother, respectively. She was later known by the last names of her stepfathers, Wassmansdorff and Loveland.
