John Rich was born in Amarillo, Texas, on January 7, 1974, where he also spent his formative years. His father, Jim, who formerly served as a Baptist minister, is father, and Judy Overton Rich is his mother.

John never saw himself as a musician when he was younger because his only career goal was to become a professional team roper. He met and joined “Texasee,” a country music band that subsequently adopted the name Lonestar when he was in Nashville. When he was selected to be the lead bass guitarist for the band, his professional music career took off. He and Richie McDonald used to occasionally switch off in the lead vocal position.
