Joel Hans: Early Life, Age, Wiki, Parents, Ethnicity
It was 2009, and the location was Yaoundè, Cameroon. Joel Hans Embiid, then 15, picked up a basketball for the first time, having no idea where it would lead him.
Embiid, who grew up playing volleyball, had never considered basketball until he met Hakeem Olajuwon.
After being inspired by his grace and elegance on the court, Joel decided to give basketball a try, and thus the journey began.
Even in Kansas, Embiid was a work in progress. This became clear to him while attending various basketball camps in the Yaoundè area.
Because he was so new to the game, he’d frequently bounce the ball off his foot, trip over a screen, and allow passes to slip right through his hands.
Embiid was unmistakable even without the polish. His incredible footwork, outside jump shot, quickness, and shot-blocking abilities were all impressive.
Even at 15, the Cameroonian displayed a skill set rarely seen in players his size, prompting comparisons to his idol, Mr. Olajuwon.

Professional Career, (Basketball Player)
Joel Hans’s first year at Montverde Academy was full of nooks and crannies from his time in Cameroon. Embiid’s first coach, Kevin Boyle, admitted that his teammates had a good laugh during his first informal practice.
When he was with his high school teammates, the majority of whom had been honing their skills for the better part of a decade, he was perplexed and occasionally klutzy, and the play stood out.
However, he would not make his mark at Montverde, as a lack of playing time prompted his decision to transfer. It was probably the best decision in retrospect.
Any player can only improve and perfect his fundamentals through experience, which he wasn’t getting at Montverde.
By 2012, Embiid was considered a five-star recruit. He committed to Kansas, one of the nation’s recruiting powerhouses, in the fall before his senior year of high school.
College Life
Embiid attended the University of Kansas for one year. On February 13, 2014, Joel was named one of 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year award.
In 2013-14, he appeared in 28 games, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes.
Joel scored at least 15 points and blocked at least five shots in seven games. He was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his back in March 2014. He was unable to compete in either the Big 12 or NCAA tournaments that year. Kansas was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round (Round of 32).

The NBA Draft
Joel declared for the draft in early April 2014, and he was expected to be selected in the top three. His back was healing on time, and after a few workouts with the Cavaliers, experts predicted he’d be the first overall pick.
Joel, on the other hand, had foot surgery just a few days before the draft to repair a navicular bone in his right foot. The surgery had not been kind to big men.
Many people never regain their speed and agility completely. Like Greg Oden, Embiid was now being labeled as an injury-prone big man whose inability to stay healthy would cost him a productive career.
The Cavs, who were still reeling from the Anthony Bennett saga two years prior, were unwilling to take such a risk. They went with Embiid’s teammate Andrew Wiggins as the safer pick.
The Bucks were interested in Jabari Parker, but Joel was chosen third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Injury
Joel’s June surgery, on the other hand, refused to heal, forcing him to miss the entire 2014-15 season. But things only got worse after Joel recovered enough to play briefly in the NBA’s summer league.
His first surgery had complications, necessitating a second. Sixers players, coaches, and personnel were all concerned that this setback would jeopardize their careers. He could be grouped with Greg Oden.
He eventually recovered from his setbacks, and by preseason, he was fully prepared.
He reminded many of them why they were so taken with him in the first place in a few brief cameos. Everyone hoped he wouldn’t end up like Oden because of his footwork, grace, rim protection, and quickness.
Preseason success has raised expectations for the regular season. Joel was the overwhelming favorite to win Rookie of the Year despite the Sixers’ crowded frontcourt. Regardless, he continues to defy expectations.

It also included an additional $30 million if he was named to the All-NBA first, second, or third teams, or if he was named MVP in 2017-18.
Embiid agreed to a four-year, $196 million contract extension with the 76ers in 2021, reaffirming his position as the team’s leader and demonstrating his belief in the team’s chances of winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
He was even ranked 48th on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes in 2019, and he is a clear candidate to win the MVP Award in the 2021-22 NBA season, leading Philadelphia to a potential NBA Finals appearance.
