A family of pilots raised Jeff Skiles. His mother, Deloris, gave birth to three boys, Jeffery being the youngest. His father, James, was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His parents had a one-engine plane that they frequently used to travel from their house to places like Alaska. They even brought Jeffery on a cross-country flight with them.
The two pilots’ sons began flying when he was sixteen years old. He took a break from school to fly freight aircraft out of Omaha, Nebraska, and then he went back to Madison to finish his geology bachelor’s degree.

In his role as vice president of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Association, Jeff advocated for improved airline safety and security to make flying safer for pilots after experiencing the toughest aviation difficulty of his career on January 15, 2009. After being appointed Vice President of Chapters and Youth Organizations for the EAA, he ended his career as a pilot.
Jeff was unable to take advantage of his retirement because of his more than 30 years of flying experience with U.S. Airways. He ultimately quit the EAA to work as an international pilot for American Airlines.
