Jason’s father is Chuck Thompson, and his mother is Sharyn Thompson. Ryan, his younger brother, played college basketball for Rider University before going pro in Europe.

Jason Thompson, a Mount Laurel, New Jersey native, led Lenape High School to the Group IV state championship in 2004. He went on to play collegiate basketball with the Rider Broncs for four seasons, averaging 20 points and ten rebounds a game in 2006-07.

In 2006-07, the athlete was one of three players in the NCAA to do so. As a senior in 2007-08, Thompson averaged 20.4 points, 2.7 assists, 12.1 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game.

On March 9, 2008, he had 32 points and 18 rebounds in a game against Marist College. Thompson had 22 points and 12 rebounds in Rider’s 74-53 loss. Despite a strong 23-10 regular season and conference tournament record, he was denied an at-large bid to the NIT.

In contrast, Rider got invited to the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament in 2008. He concluded his collegiate career as the Broncs’ all-time leading rebounder.
