Jalen grew up surrounded by his family, the majority of whom are involved with basketball or are athletes. Larry, his father, was a basketball player at Woodbury as well as in junior college. His cousins D’Marr Suggs, Dion Suggs-Young, and Renard Suggs all participated in collegiate basketball. In contrast, Terrell Suggs, his other cousin, was a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens at Arizona State University.

Jalen Suggs is currently concentrating on his basketball career; as a result, he stated in January 2020 that he had left his current school, Minnesota, and was being recruited by Gonzaga. On Friday, January 3, 2020, during the ESPN2 coverage of Sierra Canyon’s (California) game against The Patrick School (New Jersey), he declared his commitment to Gonzaga.

He explained in the recruitment announcement why he choose Gonzaga over schools like Florida State, Minnesota, Florida, and Lowa State:

He added that he will offer himself and look forward to a professional contract in the near future. He wants to play for Gonzaga in the meantime to hone his skills.

Additionally, Jalen currently holds the record for being the highest-ranked recruit in school history and the first to announce his decision to join the team on a national TV broadcast (ESPN2).
