Shumpert attended River Forest and Oak Park High Schools. He was a first-team all-state player and one of the top 30 seniors in the country. During his junior and senior years, he led his team to three conference titles and was voted conference MVP.

He enrolled at Georgia Tech and was the school’s fourth-leading scorer in the 2008-09 season as a freshman. After arthroscopic surgery to repair his injured meniscus in the 2009-10 season, he missed six games.
