Lundqvist, the athlete, was born on March 2, 1982, in, Sweden’s Jämtland province. Joel is his identical twin brother.

The twins learned to skate in an outdoor ice rink built by their kindergarten teachers during the winter. Their town was well-known for alpine skiing, but they preferred ice hockey.
