Hazel was born on May 24, 1965, in St. Andrews, Scotland, and graduated with a degree in art history from the University of St. Andrews.
She earned a degree in art history, but sports writing has always been her area of interest. As a result, she made her debut on STV’s Scottish Football Program, “Scotsport,” in October 1987, marking the beginning of her career in sports media.
Later, she continued on her journey to a bright future by making her broadcast debut on the ITV Sports network. She was given the opportunity of a lifetime to host the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul alongside the renowned Dickie Davies thanks to the platform.
She eventually seized the opportunity to cover sports in 1990 after BBC Sports recognized the flair she brought to sports journalism. She began reporting golf for BBC Sports in 1990.
Hazel covered the 2014 Commonwealth Games for the BBC as a sports reporter, and her remark catapulted her to the next level of fame. She called the individuals seen on camera without tops “taps-aff,” which is British slang for “tops-off.” During the 2014 Commonwealth Games, this term was one of the most frequently used. The phrase is said to have first appeared in the media in 2008 and 2009, but Hazel is credited with popularizing it.
But she quickly announced her departure from The Masters, a BBC golf tournament, in 2017, and Eilidh Barbour took her place.
Hazel joined the Euro Sports coverage team in early 2019 along with other BBC sports reporters. Along with John Virgo and John Parrott, Hazel will be reporting on snooker.
