The first licensed American television meteorologist and Emmy-winning weather forecaster are Greg Fishel. Since October 2019, he has served as the Senior Atmospheric Scientist for the business Priogen Energy.

For almost 38 years, he was the Capitol Broadcasting Company’s chief meteorologist (WRAL-TV) (from June 1981 to February 2019).

Greg Fishel was born in Pennsylvania on February 19, 1957. He earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Meteorology from Penn State University. From 1975 through 1979, he attended classes there.

In March 1980, Greg Fishel began working as a broadcast meteorologist at WMDT in Salisbury, Maryland. He worked there for a year and a half, until June 1981, when he transferred to the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina–based Capitol Broadcasting Company’s WRAL-TV.

He was even given the American Meteorological Society award in 1985 for his outstanding broadcasting, and in 1989, he was promoted to chief meteorologist of the station (WRAL-TV), taking the place of Bob DeBardelaben. The Midsouth Region’s hurricane special won him an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2000.

In February 2019, he finally left his post at Capitol Broadcasting Company’s WRAL-TV after over 38 years of employment. His termination was attributed by the business to a “personnel concern.” He later worked as a senior atmospheric scientist with Priogen Energy.
