Tony Vallelonga was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, to Nicholas Vallelonga and Nazarena Vallelonga, and was given the name Frank Anthony Vallelonga. When he was a youngster, his family moved to the Bronx, and he spent his boyhood on 215th Street, not far from where John Gotti spent his formative years.

Tony Lip acquired his nickname from his Italian parents as a boy because he was very persuasive and could talk his way out of any difficulty. Lip died in 1999, together with his late wife, Dolores Vallelonga (née Venere), with whom he had a house in Paramus, New Jersey. Lip died on January 4, 2013, in Teaneck, New Jersey. He was 82 years old at the time. He is also survived by his sons Nick Vallelunga and Frank Vallelonga Jr., as well as his brother Rudy Vallelonga and a grandchild.

Professional Career

He joined the United States Army in 1951 and served until 1953. Beginning in 1961, he worked as maitre d’hôtel and supervisor at the Copacabana nightclub, where he met a broad range of well-known personalities. He served as a bouncer between 1962 and 1963 and was employed to both drive and protect pianist Don Shirley when he was on tour in the Jim Crow South. The term “The Green Book” refers to a segregation-era manual for African-American motorists. It told them which businesses, such as restaurants, garages, and motels, would service black consumers.
