In high school, Eric was a superb athlete, finishing as the second-best runner in the nation for the Buffaloes. With 1,628 yards and 17 touchdowns, he placed third in the 1991 Heisman Trophy voting, behind BYU’s Ty Detmer and Notre Dame’s Raghib Ismail. He is the highest rusher at Colorado with 3,940 rushing yards, 4,351 total yards, and 42 touchdowns.
He received unanimous All-America recognition for playing on Colorado’s national championship team in 1990, earning him the nickname “Scooter.” As a senior, he won the Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year award.
