Dana Zátopková (born on the same day and year as her husband) won a gold medal in the javelin throw in the 1952 Olympics, just seconds after Emil won the 5,000 m; she came in second in the 1960 Olympics.
During her news conference, Emil attempted to credit his wife’s Olympic success, claiming that his victory in the 5,000 m had “inspired” her. “Is that true?” Dana retorted. Okay, go motivate another girl and see if she can throw a javelin fifty meters!”
Zátopek was honored for his outgoing personality and his ability to communicate in six languages. International athletes he had met at competitions paid him regular visits at his Prague home. A British opponent, Gordon Pirie, described it as “the merriest and gayest mansion I’ve ever been in.”
Emil and Dana were witnesses at the wedding of Olympic gold medalists Olga Fikotová and Harold Connolly in Prague in 1957. Furthermore, at the height of the Cold War between the two countries, Emil approached Czechoslovak President Antonn Zápotock, requesting help in obtaining permission for national heroine Olga to marry American Connolly.
