The champion cyclist was born as Egan Arley Bernal Gómez to father Germán and mother Flor. Egan was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and raised in Zipaquirá, a small town in the country.

A shaky start in 2022
Bernal did not have a good start to the year 2022. During a training ride with his teammates in Gachancipá, he collided with a stopped passenger bus. He allegedly hit the bus at a speed of 50 km/hr (31mph).
Later, Bernal’s team, Ineos Grenadiers, issued a statement saying he had a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung, and several rib fractures.
According to the doctors at Clinica Universidad de La Sabana, it was a dangerous situation. Doctors discovered 20 fractures in Bernal’s body and warned him that he might never be able to return to the tracks. He could be paralyzed or even die, they said.
