Professional Career
After graduating from college, Gottlieb went undrafted in the NBA draft but was the Oklahoma Storm’s first-round choice in the United States Basketball League in 2000. Gottlieb’s first season with the Storm was a success, as he led the USBL in assists and helped the Storm finish second in their debut season (losing to the Dodge City Legend in the USBL Championship Game).
Gottlieb co-hosted “The Sports Animal,” a lunchtime sports talk program on Oklahoma City radio station WWLS 640 AM, in 2002. He accepted the position in Oklahoma City only after landing a contract calling college basketball games for ESPN and ESPN Regional. Gottlieb also called Oklahoma State games for the Cowboy Basketball Network. Gottlieb returned to France at the conclusion of the 2002–2003 season to play for Claremont Ferrand. When he returned to the United States, he trained with the Minnesota Timberwolves Summer League squad and co-hosted the NBA Draft on ESPN Radio.
Gottlieb began contributing to the CBS Sports Minute on CBS Radio stations around the nation in 2013. CBS chose to switch the Doug Gottlieb Show to a TV simulcast format in 2014. Doug Gottlieb is married to long-time friend Angie Collier. They originally met while they were both students at Oklahoma State University in late 1998. After their initial encounter, they went to a bar with other friends to watch a live football game. The following day, Doug asked Angie out on a date, and they began dating the next day. In October 1999, he proposed to Angie with a self-designed engagement ring, and they married.
On August 12, 2000, Doug and Angie exchanged wedding vows. Harper and Grace Gottlieb (born 14 April 2006) are twin girls, and Hayes Gottlieb is a son (b. 14 April 2006).
Coaching
Gottlieb assisted then-University of Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl in coaching the United States squad in the 2009 Maccabiah Games. He coached Team USA in basketball in the 2017 Maccabiah Games, when the team won gold after defeating France in the final in Jerusalem. He had won a gold medal as a player at the Maccabiah Games, but added, “It is more amazing to win as a coach.”
