So, whenever they had free time from their academics, young Vida and his brother Hrvoje Vida enjoyed playing football together. In reality, the Croatians would only think about football when they were in school.

Domagoj consequently joined the NK Osi youth academy, his neighborhood club. After that, the young prodigy Vida remained with the club for a short while before Osijek entered and snatched her up.

Professional Career, (Football Player)

Domagoj made his professional debut in 2006 at the youthful age of 17 not long after joining Osijek.

The Croatian would then make just 12 appearances in his first season because he needed more time to mature and adjust. Vida had however pleased his management enough to earn a starting spot the next year.

And that’s exactly what happened, solidifying the excellent center-back’s place in the starting 11. For example, Vida played 22 games for the team, starting nearly all of them.

Domagoj then stayed with the team for an additional two years before joining Bundesliga powerhouse Bayer Leverkusen.

The Croatian international has played 95 games for Osijek at the time of his transfer, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

Domagoj signed a €3 million contract with Bayer Leverkusen, a Bundesliga team, on April 29, 2010, after leaving Osijek. The Croatian center then appeared to have made it to the major leagues, but it was not to be.

As an example, Vida only made nine appearances the entire season. In reality, the 32-year-old was only able to make one replacement appearance in the Bundesliga.

Domagoj joined the team in the hopes of becoming a star, but his time there ended up being the worst of his life.

Vida decided to leave the club after just one season to get more playing time. Domagoj’s yearning to play more was granted when he was supposedly signed by Dinamo Zagreb for a €1.75 million contract, the biggest club in Croatia.

After that, the Croatian center-back established himself as a mainstay in the Dinamo defense, appearing in 47 matches and helping the team win the league.

The campaign was not without controversy, though, as television footage from a Champions League match against Lyon showed Vida winking shortly after Lyon had scored their fifth goal.

The match was therefore widely believed to have been manipulated, and Vida was the main suspect. However, due to a lack of sufficient proof, UEFA did not take any action against the club or the player.

The subsequent season with Dinamo ended up being maybe the worst of his professional career. For instance, Domagoj played in only 28 games this season because of the fights he got into throughout the season.

Vida was expelled from the bus on September 24, 2012, for cracking open a beer while traveling to a cup game. The Croatian international was benched for several games as a result of his frequent arguments with his coach.

Dinamo Zagreb decided to sell Domagoj as a result. Numerous clubs subsequently expressed interest in the gifted defender, but in the end, Ukrainian powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv was able to capture Vida’s services.

To get the Croatian center back, Dynamo specifically paid a transfer fee of €6 million to Zagreb. Following that, Domagoj spent five years with the club in the capital, where he had several amazing experiences.

To win the Ukrainian Premier League for the first time in six years, Vida scored the game-winning goal against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The league championship was won by Dynamo Kyiv again the following season, and Domagoj once more established himself as one of the team’s key contributors.

The Croatian international stayed at Dynamo for an additional two years after that before starting a new journey. By the time Vida completed playing for Dynamo Kyiv, he had participated in 161 games and had contributed to 13 goals and 8 assists.

The Croatian center, though, believed that a change of scenery was necessary for him to advance his game. Similar to Domagoj, who transferred to Turkish powerhouse Besiktas for €9 million in the winter of 2018.

Many spectators and analysts agreed that the price paid for the defender was a little excessive.

Vida, however, was unaffected by it at all and kept up his excellent form. The Besiktas center-back’s performance was so impressive that the team chose to make Domagoj their highest-paid player.

Sadly, despite being paid a huge wage by Besiktas, Vida has failed to win any championships during his two seasons with the team. With eight games remaining in the season, Besiktas is currently nine points behind the leader.

So, we have complete faith that Besiktas and Vida will be able to overcome their disadvantage and prevail this year. However, the league must first resume because it has been impacted by the global Corona Virus epidemic (COVID-19).

Similar to this, Vida’s debut World Cup appearance occurred in 2014. The 32-year-old did not, however, play in any of Croatia’s games during the competition.

The Besiktas defender nevertheless received a useful experience that will be beneficial to him in the future. After that, Vida improved his performance since he was determined to be a starter by the time the Euros arrived.

And Domagoj accomplished just that while participating in three games at the UEFA Euro 2016. Sadly, Croatia was ousted by eventual champions Portugal.

The Croatian national team, however, had demonstrated enough talent to be viewed as one of the underdogs for the 2017 FIFA World Cup.

Croatia eventually made it to the World Cup final in 2018 because of Vida’s great play. In actuality, Domagaj was Croatia’s second-best player after Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric.

As an example, the 32-year-old gave his team a 2-1 advantage in extra time by scoring a header against the home nation of Russia in the quarterfinal. In addition, Vida contributed to Croatia’s goal against France in the championship match, which put Croatia ahead.

In the end, France defeated Croatia 4-2, winning the World Cup. Even so, no one had predicted that the Croatian national team would make it to the World Cup final, therefore they had surpassed all expectations.

In addition, Domagoj’s standing increased dramatically as a result of his outstanding efforts in the competition.

Consequently, on October 15, 2018, the Besiktas defender led his nation for the first time. The Croatian defender also added a goal to the special occasion’s 2-1 victory over Jordan.

As of this writing, Vida has made 79 appearances and four goals for the national team. We don’t believe anyone will be shocked if the Croatian center-back goes on to earn 100 appearances for his nation based on the caliber and consistency of Domagoj.
