Doja was born on October 21, 1995, into a very creative household in the Tarzana district of Los Angeles, California. American Jewish painter Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer is her mother. Her father, the Zulu-American actor, composer, and producer Dumisani Dlamini is well known for playing the title role in the musical movie Sarafina in 1992. Doja claims that she was never introduced to her father as a child. However, her father disputes this, saying that he and his daughter have a “good” connection.
Doja and her mother went to New York City shortly after Doja was born, where they stayed for five years. Later, her family relocated to Oak Park, California, where her mother enrolled her beginning at age five in ballet, tap, and jazz courses. She had singing lessons from her aunt, a singer, to assist her to get into a performing arts college. When she was 11 years old, her family relocated to a neighborhood close to Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles, where they spent four years living in an ashram and practicing Hinduism.
Doja used to visit the shrine and sing bhajans while donning head scarves throughout this time in her life. She asserts that after that, she lost interest in education and developed a preference for dance. She had been doing Bharatanatyam, an Indian traditional dance form, while she was at the ashram. By year’s end, “So High,” her first-ever permanent upload to SoundCloud, had attracted Dr. Luke, who at the age of 17 signed her to Kemosabe Records, RCA Records, and publishing house Prescription Songs. A temporary artist management agreement with Roc Nation was also included in this transaction. Doja Cat released Purrr!, her debut EP, in August 2014. Before the EP’s release, “So High” was repackaged and made available as her solo commercial debut single. The song later appeared in the Fox series Empire in the third episode of the first season.
