His father worked for a Railway Express Agency as a mechanic, and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Both of his parents had received a fourth-grade education. He and his parents lived in Akron from the time he was born until 1941. The family moved to Greensburg, Ohio, in 1941, to a small farm known as Green. His father took him to Michigan to fish during the summer when he was four years old. In 1973, he stopped fishing.
He graduated from Green High School, which is now Green, Ohio, in 1949. He was a football, baseball, and basketball player in high school. Dick Goddard was a meteorologist in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1955. He tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Firestone Park before joining the National Weather Service. He became chief meteorologist at WJW-TV in Cleveland in 1966 and stayed there until his retirement in November 2016. At Sampson Air Force Base, he also received basic training. In 1960, he joined the weather team at KYW-TV in Cleveland, which was owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting.
