Sheri Lipman, the legal advisor for the University of Memphis, claims that the NCAA informed the school that Rose had “an invalidated standardized test result in the prior year at Chicago’s Simeon High School” after a month of the team’s defeat by Kansas.
The NCAA also issued Memphis a letter the following January accusing Memphis of allowing Rose to cheat on his SAT in order for him to be eligible to play at Memphis.
Memphis launched its probe in response to these NCAA accusations.
Following an investigation, it was discovered that Rose had unexpectedly passed the SAT in Detroit after failing the ACT three times in Chicago.
Rose also asserted that he took the exam but couldn’t recall his results.
Additionally, Rose didn’t answer when the NCAA tried to contact him twice to confirm his identification while looking into the matter.
He repeatedly disputed the allegations to the national media as they began to circulate, claiming,
I took the test, I know that. I seized it. That much is certain.
A handwriting expert was subsequently hired for the investigation. The expert concluded after examining the handwriting that the writing on the test is most likely not Rose’s.
But he must have taken the test if he claimed to have done so. Memphis also failed to uncover any proof that Rose had cheated at the same period.
Following that, Rose made a statement through his lawyer in which he stated:
“It is encouraging to see that the NCAA’s verdict found no evidence of my wrongdoing. People need to know that I did everything requested of me while I was a student at the university, including offering full cooperation in the university’s investigation of this matter, and that I was ultimately granted permission by the NCAA Clearinghouse and the university to participate in all games during the 2007–2008 season. I’m eager to put this in the past.
Furthermore, Derrick gave to the scholarship fund and reached a settlement outside of court on August 20, 2009, the same day the NCAA annulled Memphis’ 2007–2008 campaign.
