Derrick played running back with the Yulee Hornets when he first turned to professional football. In 2009, as a rookie, he carried for 2,465 yards and 26 touchdowns. In 2010, he was voted to the first team of the All-Coast rushing backs after averaging 8.9 yards per carry while rushing for 2,788 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also recorded 111 running yards and his first college rushing touchdown on October 19 in a 52-0 win over Arkansas.
