On September 23, 2000, during the opening event of the first day of the heptathlon competition at the Summer Olympics, Lewis finished the 100-meter obstacles in 13.23 seconds, coming in second to Eunice Hairstylist, who had finished in 12.97 seconds. Lewis placed second in the third round of the shot put with a distance of 15.55 meters, 30 points behind Natallia Sazanovich and 45 points ahead of Sabine Braun, the former champion. She ran 200 meters in the final event of the day in 24.34 seconds. The long jump was the main event the following day, and her best leap was 6.48 m. Lewis threw the spear 50.19 meters in the sixth event.
