If you enjoy skiing and consider it a hobby, you’ve heard of David Wise, a well-known skier, and two-time Olympic gold medallist.

The American skier was born on June 30, 1990, to a household of winter sports enthusiasts.

The 32-year-old was born in Reno, Nevada, and began skiing at the age of three with his two sisters, Christy and Jessica, and his father, Thomas.

Christy Wise also competed in Para Alpine Skiing for the United States of America. After a boating accident in 2015, Chirsty’s leg was amputated above the knee.

His community was close to major ski resorts in California. As a result, he began skiing at a young age and acquired a passion for jumping, whether on the trampoline in the back of his garden or on the Sierra Nevada slopes.

Beginnings of a Career

In 2011, the Nevada town native began freestyle skiing and joined his first local freestyle ski team. He later trained with Clay Beck and competed in moguls, aerials, big air, and slopestyle skiing.

Later, he saw the halfpipe event on TV at the X Games and became interested in it. He then began competing at the junior level.

Superpipe Competition

He used to compete in Superpipe contests before discovering the halfpipe. In 2012, he began competing in the superpipe event.

In 2012, he competed in the Winter X Games for the superpipe event and won his first gold medal. The following year, 2012, he earned his third consecutive gold medal at X Games VIII for the superpipe event.

David earned his fourth gold medal in the superpipe event at the X Games in 2018. He did, however, lose in the final and received a silver medal in the 2019 X Games.

Similarly, placed seventh and fifth in the X Games in 2020 and 2021, respectively. He finally made it to the podium after a long absence, taking bronze in the 2022 X Games ski superpipe event.

Following that, he continued to compete in the World Championship beyond 2013, appearing in 2017, 2019, and 2021 but failing to win any medals in those years.

Davis competed in the Olympic Games for the first time in 2014, representing the United States in the Halfpipe event.

In the same year, the Halfpipe event was added as an Olympic event, and he went on to win the gold medal, becoming the first-ever winner of the event in history.

Wise will represent the United States in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, to defend his Olympic championship.

However, his start in the final competition did not go as planned. He qualified for the finals in fifth place after failing to complete his first two runs due to a binding issue.

However, in an unexpected change of events, his third and final run went exceptionally well. So much so that he scored 97.20 and won the gold medal, becoming the only player in Olympic history to win the gold medal twice in a row.

David Wise | Accident

Wise had a difficult year in 2016, as he dislocated his shoulder at the Mammoth Mountain World Cup.

He also suffered a concussion and back injury the same year, missing numerous critical matches.

Wise injured his femur skiing in Austria in 2019, missing the rest of the season and suffering from a terrible case of singles that manifested on his face, on his left eye in September 2021.

Wise has also had chronic neck problems during his skiing career.
