Dan, who was born on May 5th, 1946, grew up in Freeport, Illinois. According to his biography, he attended Freeport High School and graduated in 1964. Dan, who has always loved writing, decided to pursue a career in journalism, which led him to enroll in The University of Illinois. In 1968, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.

After graduating, Dan served in the US military from 1968 until 1971. The journalist continued his education after leaving the military, eventually finishing his master’s degree in 1972.
