Cushing, who was born in Greece on May 9, 1964, was raised in Canada. When she was a young child of one year, her entire family relocated to Canada. She practiced cooking as a child because she has always had a liking for it.
But she earned her linguistics training at the University of Toronto before enrolling in the Food and Beverage Management Program at George Brown College in 1986. She also earned a top grade at the Grand Diploma program at the Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris.
