20 February 1963 saw the birth of Charles Wade Barkley. He was born in Leeds, Alabama, to parents Frank and Charley Barkley. Charles was raised by his mother after his parents got divorced.
His father abandoned them because he didn’t want to shoulder the burden of parenting. Charles was too little to recall when his father abandoned him.
There weren’t always butterflies and rainbows in Barkley’s youth. With his mother, stepfather, and siblings, he experienced a difficult upbringing. When he was 11 years old, his stepfather was killed in a vehicle accident.
He was the first black child to be born in an all-white hospital, and he was born in a segregated Alabama town. He was also among the first black children to attend an elementary school that was integrated.
His grandmother had to take Charles to school while carrying a weapon concealed in a purse since this prompted furious white folks to amass outside the school.
Charley, Charles’ mother, worked two to three jobs while cleaning houses and cooking for white folks.
Charles was required to look after his younger brothers. When she couldn’t hire a babysitter, Charley would bring their children to work and conduct some yard work for which he was compensated.

Despite his progress, he didn’t get the attention of colleges until the state high school semifinals.

Hobby Career
Barkley spent three seasons playing collegiate basketball for Auburn University. He double-majored in business management and basketball.
In addition, he won accolades throughout his tenure in college, including Player of the Year in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1984, three All-SEC choices, and a Second Team All-American selection.
His zeal and drive helped him secure the center position despite being shorter than the normal center.
He became well-known during his undergraduate career for his ability to win over crowds by thrilling them with dunks and blocked shots, regardless of his size or weight.
Along with being known as “The Round Mound of Rebound” and the “Crisco Kid,” these abilities also led to some people doubting his ability to advance very far. Some others described him as an “undersized power forward with rebounding as his sole noticeable basketball skill.”
He averaged 14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 1.6 assists, and 9.6 rebounds a game over the course of his three years in college. For the 1984 NBA draft, Barkley departed before his last season.
Career in the Profession
The Philadelphia 76ers selected Barkley in the 1984 NBA Draft. He was selected in the first round with the fifth pick. Despite being tiny, he was one of the best rebounders in the game thanks to his amazing leaping ability and tremendous power.
He had joined a group that included players who had helped Philadelphia win the NBA title in 1983, including Julius Erving, Moses Malon, and Maurice Cheeks.
Barkley managed his weight and improved his skills while Malone was watching over him. In the first year, he scored 14.0 points per game on average throughout the regular season.
Barkley played for Philadelphia for eight seasons. As one of the few NBA players to have an action figure created by Kenner’s Starting Lineup, he also attained a great deal of fame.
In the 1992–93 season, Barkley was transferred to the Phoenix Suns. In his debut season, he contributed to Phoenix having the best record in the NBA, which helped the team reach its first NBA Finals trip since 1976 and earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player honor.
Additionally, he was the only third player to get the honor right after being traded. They unfortunately fell to the Chicago Bulls in the NBA finals despite having led their club there.
The best part of Barkley’s time with the Phoenix Suns was his rookie season.
Their bond had already eroded by the time he left the Suns for good. And had stated that if he wasn’t traded to a contender, he would think about retirement. He was dealt to the Houston Rockets in 1996.
Rockets of Houston
His final opportunity to win the NBA championship title was with the Houston Rockets. Instead, he joined the seasoned group that included Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.
It wasn’t a good year for him in his debut season with the Rockets. For example, he shoved Charles Oakley and received a $5,000 fine and a season-opening suspension.
In the 1996–97 season, his work with the Rockets helped him reach the conference finals. Unfortunately, he was unable to capture the NBA title.
Barkley’s basketball career was ended in 1999 after he ruptured his left quadriceps tendon, one of several injuries that have plagued him over the years.
He returned after four months for one final game in 2000 because basketball meant so much to him and he didn’t want an injury to be his final basketball memory.
Olympics
Barkley took part in the Olympic competitions in 1992 and 1996. They received gold medals for both competitions while competing for the American men’s basketball team.
