Her debut film role was as Janice Lyman in the 1981 made-for-television drama film Family Reunion, in which she portrayed the main character. Ehlers is most known for her work in soap operas including General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful. She is likely best known for her role as Harley Cooper on the long-running CBS serial series Guiding Light, for which she was nominated for an Emmy.

Her character first appeared on the program from 1987 to 1993, but her performance was so well received that she was brought back in 1997 and raised to the status of one of the primary characters with an overarching character arc.
