Anna Makurat began her career in 2013. She started with the youth groups of the BAT Sierakowice club.
She is eager to demonstrate to everyone that she has the attitude and expertise to play like the poised professional she was ten years older than as a teenager playing against women in Poland’s premier professional league before coming to UConn.
Her coach, Auriemma, said one thing she liked about her before she arrived at Storrs last summer was that she was a total professional who didn’t get distracted.
During pick-up games, her teammates commented on how effective her 3-point shot was.
Women’s basketball at UConn is not exactly regarded as a welcoming environment for first-year students.

Makurat previously played for Arka Gdynia in Poland’s professional league, Basket Liga Kobiet.
The league has featured WNBA players such as former Husky Tiffany Hayes, Jasmine Thomas of the Connecticut Sun, and Rebecca Allen of the New York Liberty.
Although Makurat did not play much basketball outside of summer workouts at UConn, she was familiar enough with the game to compare it to the Polish league.
Makurat should have stayed in her home country because she was already in a professional league and had begun her pro career at 19. However, the best option isn’t always the simplest.
“Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to pursue your dream,” she said. “Coming here to play basketball, competing and playing at the highest level, has always been my dream.”
Makurat is expected to be an immediate addition for the Huskies, with a strong desire to strike it from deep and wide court vision. At the very least, an immediate offensive boost.

Last season, Anna Makurat fared better than the others. The Huskies’ first Polish player eventually figured out what was expected of her and began to play well by the end of the regular season.
Last season, Makurat averaged 7.9 points per game while also ranking second on the team in assists (105) and steals (tied for third) (47).
Then she went 1-for-13 in her first three games of her career, missing all ten 3-point attempts. Adapting her sluggish gait to the much faster American pace of play proved difficult.
