Personal Life: Girlfriends, Wife, and Children

Honnold lived in a van for more than a decade. “I don’t believe ‘van life’ is really enticing,” he says. “I don’t like living in a car, but I do like living in all of these places.” I like being in Yosemite; I like being pretty much everywhere where the weather is pleasant; I like being able to keep an eye on favorable conditions all around. And I want to enjoy myself while I’m doing it. As a result, staying in a car is practically mandatory… If I could mysteriously move a house from one location to another, I’d like to live in a nice, pleasant house.

In 2017, Honnold bought a home in the Las Vegas area. “I didn’t have any furniture at first, so I lived in the vehicle in the driveway for the first few weeks.” It seemed like I was at home rather than in an empty house.” Around the same time, he traded in his 200,000-mile 2007 Ford Econoline truck for a new 2016 Ram ProMaster, which he now lives in and drives for most of the year.

Honnold is a vegetarian who doesn’t drink alcohol or use illegal drugs. He describes himself as a militant anti-religion atheist and feminist, as well as an avid reader with a passion for classic literature, environmental issues, and economics.

Is Alex Honnold a Gay?

He is not homosexual. Because he is married to Sanni, he is solely interested in women.

Career Opportunities

“Honnold emerged completely developed from the goo in the minds of the climbing community,” according to a 2011 Alpinist profile. In 2006, no one had heard of him. Honnold rose to prominence in 2007 after free soloing Yosemite’s Astroman and the Rostrum in a single day, duplicating Peter Croft’s legendary 1987 achievement. He free soloed the 1,200-foot 5.12d finger crack on Zion’s Moonlight Buttress a year ago.

The ascension was confirmed on April 1. For days, people believed the news was a scam. Honnold achieved history when he free soloed Half Dome’s 2,000-foot Regular Northwest Face, which had been glacially demolished, five months later. Croft named this climb “the most stunning ropeless ascent ever.”

He gained media attention after his solo of Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face in 2012 was included in the film Alone on the Wall and a subsequent 60 Minutes interview. In November 2011, Honnold and Hans Florine missed achieving the world record time on Yosemite’s El Capitan’s Nose path by 45 seconds.

Dean Potter and Sean Leary established the previous record in November 2010 with a time of 2:36:45. On June 17, 2012, Honnold and Florine set a new record of 2:23:46 (or 2:23:51) on the same route. In November 2014, Clif Bar, Dean Potter, Steph Davis, Timmy O’Neill, and Cedar Wright announced that they would no longer be funding Honnold.

Awards

For recording the narrative of 33-year-old Alex Honnold as he completed the seemingly impossible: ascending Mount Everest without oxygen, National Geographic’s “Free Solo” earned an Academy Award for best documentary film. Without using a pole, El Capitan, a 3,000-foot granite feature in Yosemite National Park, was scaled.
