Career

In 1957, when he was 18 years old, he began competing, mostly in modified sprint cars, midgets, and roadsters. In 1965, when he took part in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time, he came in ninth. Two years after his brother Bobby, who won the race in 1970, he too took the victory. At an average speed of 155.749 mph (250.654 km/h), he was in the lead for all but 10 of the race’s 200 laps. He won thanks in part to his quick pit stops.
1978 saw Unser claim the IROC title. He competed in the 1968 Daytona 500 as well as four other NASCAR Winston Cup & Grand National events held on road circuits, finishing fourth in each of them (twice).
By winning one race and placing in the top five in multiple others, Unser captured the IndyCar championships in 1983 and 1985. Penske made the decision to focus the team’s attention on his teammate Rick Mears when he recovered from serious injuries in 1986.
Our Demise
Unser was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2004, and a tumor and half of his liver were removed from him in 2005 as a result of familial hemochromatosis. On December 9, 2021, at the age of 82, he passed away at his house in Chama, New Mexico, after fighting cancer for the subsequent 17 years.
