Aksel Lund Svindal was born on December 26, 1982, in the municipality of Lrenskog, county of Akershus, Norway.

Aksel’s parents, Bjrn Svindal and Ina Lund gave him a pair of skis for his third birthday when he was three years old. Because Bjrn and Ina were both skiers, they encouraged their children to participate in the sport.

Because his grandparents owned a cabin in Geilo municipality, his family spent every winter there. Geilo is a major tourist destination known for its ski resorts and mountain paths, and it is where Aksel started to ski.

Svindal grew up in Fetsund, Lillestrm Viken, until he was six years old. His family then relocated to Skedsmo municipality, where he spent the remainder of his youth.

Unfortunately, his mother, Ina, died shortly after giving birth to her third child due to problems. After a while, the infant also died.

Early Childhood

On October 28, 2001, Aksel Lund Svindal made his World Cup debut at the age of 18. He competed in the 2002 World Junior Championships in Tarvisio, Italy, where he won a gold medal in combined and a silver medal in super-G.

He also won bronze medals in downhill and slalom. Svindal first competed in the World Championships in 2003, but he did not finish in the top three until 2005.

Aksel Lund Svindal won gold in the downhill and giant slalom events at the 2007 World Championships in re, Sweden.

Injury

Svindal was injured on a first training run of the Birds of Prey downhill ski course in Beaver Creek, Colorado, on November 27, 2007. He had fractured bones in his face and a major gash in his crotch and abdomen after smashing into a safety fence.

Unfortunately, he was unable to return for the remainder of the 2008 season. But, in October 2008, Svindal returned to the 43rd World Cup season, and he was better than ever.

Following his recovery, he won the downhill and super-G races on the same ski course where he was gravely injured the previous year.

Svindal won a silver medal in the downhill competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics on February 15. It was Norway’s hundredth silver medal at the Winter Olympics, a milestone no other country has accomplished.

Svindal earned his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s super-G category on February 19, 2010. On February 23, he also won a bronze medal in the giant slalom.

At the 2011 World Championships in Germany, he won another super-combined. In 2013, he won gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-G event.

Following his rehabilitation, Svindal competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, where he earned his second gold medal in the downhill event. Furthermore, he became the oldest alpinist to win an Olympic gold medal.

Retirement

Aksel Lund Svindal announced his retirement from alpine skiing in January 2019.

He did, however, compete in the 2019 Ski World Championships in, Sweden, where he finished second in the downhill. On February 9, 2019, he officially retired.

Svindal finished the World Championships with five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. He also won two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal at the Olympics.

Svindal won two World Cup overall titles and nine discipline titles, including two downhill victories, five super-G victories, one giant slalom victory, and one combined event. Similarly, Svindal won 36 World Cup races in 17 seasons.
