Morio Ikeda, her grandfather, was reared by Japanese immigrants from Fukuoka before being born on Hawaii’s Big Island. He was there, working as an engineer, when the Second World War in Tokyo started, preventing him from leaving for America.
His time in Japan may have been fruitful because he got to know Akiko’s lovely grandmother there. Akiko has always questioned why her grandparents never returned to the United States. After her grandfather passed away in 2012, her mother later discovered several of his vital papers, including his high school transcripts, graduation, passenger list from the S.S. Monterey, a ticket for a ship to California, and many others.
She discovered the real reason her grandfather never returned to the United States. The Great Tokyo Air Raid, which claimed 100,000 lives of Japanese people, including his friends, marked a turning moment in his life and convinced him to remain in Japan.
39-year-old Akiko received her degree from the University of Southern California, where she double-majored in international relations and broadcast journalism.
