Heels, a 2021 television series that launched on Starz on August 15, is a family drama that takes us behind the scenes of professional wrestling’s once-secretive world.
Jack Spade and Ace Spade, played by Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig, are blood siblings who compete in scripted wrestling matches in the fictional town of Duffy, Georgia.
Heels has gotten good reviews since its debut, with many complimenting the series for portraying wrestling’s riveting action outside of the ring on the big screen. However, the cast and executive producer, Mike O’Malley, have discussed the difficulties they had when filming the series because it was set in the midst of a pandemic.
The ‘Heels’ Cast
The cast members publicly discussed the difficult period and their responsibilities in different interviews. Allen Maldonado, who portrays Rooster Robbins in the series, stated that he never felt endangered on set. Due to all the safety precautions and delays, he added, it was an intriguing but difficult period to stay in quarantine and work longer shifts.
In a Deadline interview, Crystal’s American actress Kelli Berglund talked about how much she enjoys working on the show. She stated that being a female wrestler was a significant chance for her. Berglund believes that her persona inspires other ambitious female fighters to prioritize their ambitions.
In an interview with TVLine, the series’ lead, Amell, who fought in WWE’s SummerSlam in 2015, said he was fortunate to have a wrestling experience.
Ludwig, on the other hand, informed the latter outlet that he had to put in a lot of effort to get into his part because he had no previous wrestling expertise.
He even recalls months of training with his co-star Stephen Amell under experienced wrestler Chavo Guerrero Jr. to make the wrestling moves in the sequence look natural.
Showrunner Explains Discipline, Isolation, and Testing
Heels’ executive producer and showrunner O’Malley discussed how the epidemic caused obstacles when filming the series with Deadline in August 2021.
The worry was justified, according to O’Malley, because several live events and film productions were canceled as a result of the circumstance. He went on to say that his team took responsibility for informing people that making films and shows was doable if done with awareness and care.
The staff demonstrated their responsibilities by testing themselves for the virus on a regular basis, staying away from people and indoor eateries, and remaining separated. The executive producer complimented the production houses Lionsgate and Starz for their dedication in making the project happen.
