Who is Tao Ren?
Tao Ren (Chinese pinyin: Dào Lián; English version and video games: Len Tao) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. Ren is the 43rd head of the Tao Family, and he was a member of Team “The Ren” during the Shaman Fights.
Ren married Iron Maiden Jeanne after the tournament and they had a son named Tao Men together.
Voice Actor of Tao Ren
The English dub voice of Tao Ren in Shaman King is Andrew Rannells, and the Japanese voice is Romi Park.
Personality
Ren is solemn, logical, and reserved. He makes an effort to project a tough and confident demeanor, but he would risk his own life for his allies. Ren is an irritable person with a short fuse who isn’t afraid to injure the source of his rage. He began using the survival of the fittest rule to overcome death as a result of how he was raised amongst dead bodies and spirits.
He also believed that his guardian ghost, Bason, was only meant to be used as a tool, and that treating him like a friend would only lead to the spirit exploiting him. Ren’s father, Tao Yan, was the source of his rage and hatred. Ren had his childhood stolen from him when he was forced to train and study at a young age, and he hated his father for all of his suffering.
Ren is an egotistical individual who doesn’t seem to mind if others think he’s arrogant. His own team, Team “The Ren,” was named after him, much to the chagrin of his teammate, Usui Horokeu. Ren is also intuitive, quick-witted, and defiant at times. He rarely pays attention to what others say or follows their instructions.
He was even bold enough to disobey his father on several occasions before and during the process of befriending Asakura Yoh.
Ren grows more trusting of others as the Shaman Fight progresses. Ren’s bonds with Chocolove and Horohoro appear to be the strongest of all his friends, despite the fact that Ren frequently fights with Horohoro. However, after Ren was fatally impaled by Peyote Diaz, it became clear that they genuinely care for one another, as Horohoro went out of his way to protect Ren until the rest of the group could assist him.
Appearance
Tao Ren was shorter than Yoh and most of his friends, but when the length of the tip of the spike in his hairstyle is added up, he appears to be taller. His hairstyle, known as a “Tongari,” includes this spike. His spiked hair is a dark purple color, and he is relatively thin. Ren’s eyes are golden yellow in the anime series, but they are usually gold, brown, or the same color as his hair in the manga-colored pages series.
His casual attire consisted of short black pants, a white dress shirt tucked in, a yellow school jacket, a dark green tie, and a pair of brown leather shoes. Ren, like Yoh, wears his school clothes as a casual outfit during the Shaman Fights’ Second Rounds. Ren began wearing long pants and a yellow scarf while traveling to America, and when his old jacket became worn out, his mother gave him a new one.
He brought a new battle uniform inspired by kung fu cloth with him when he left for America. The pants and vest are both black with a triangular pattern on the inside and a yellow lining, and the pants are tied with a white silk belt. The vest also has a back opening that shows off his Tao tattoo.
He brought it with him before the Shaman Fight began, but he never wore it during the fights in America because they were all so sudden that he never had the chance to change.
He grew taller over the next seven years, and his long hair was braided into a three-pronged Tongari. He usually wears a black suit with a purple shirt and a yellow necktie in his adult years.

Abilities and Powers
Ren has a very strong body as a normal human being, as evidenced by his rigorous and ongoing training. He is an expert in martial arts and sword fighting, as well as learning techniques by simply watching them, as he was able to learn many of Asakura Mikihisa’s techniques firsthand, and he learned to use Over Soul by simply watching Chrome do so.
Ren is a powerful shaman who can perform feats that most shamans of his age would not be able to, such as staring straight into the heart of the Great Spirit without fainting, which only a handful of shamans can do.
Ren becomes one of the Five Elemental Warriors, and his Furyoku is attuned to lightning, allowing him to move and attack in the blink of an eye. Kyoyama Anna examined Ren and the others’ Furyoku values as he fought his way through the Plants. There, his Furyoku level is revealed to be around 100,001.
Weapons
Ren fights with a guandao, a Chinese bladed-polearm that he used for both his Hyi-Gattai and later as a medium for his first Over-Soul, at the start of the series. Ren’s guandao was incinerated by Asakura Hao during the second round of the Shaman Fights, but he was later seen wielding another one during his fight with Nichrom.
Sword of Bao-Lei
The Bao-Lei Sword is a silver sword and the Tao Family’s most prized heirloom. Ren’s father had given it to him. Ren switched to the Bao-Lei Sword after Asakura Hao incinerated his guandao. He creates two new Over Souls with this sword: the “Super Bushin” and the “Bushin Fish Fin.”
Spirit
The Bao-Lei Sword and Bason
Ren’s guardian ghost is Bason. Bason, a fierce Kublai Khan-era warrior, has always served the Tao family, even after his death. Ren’s Over-Soul was channeled through the Bao-Lei Sword, which increased Bason’s strength and evolved him into a Seirei class spirit.
Ren’s first Over Soul was used for most melee attacks, but he later created the Super Bushin, which was able to use Bason’s military experience to create dozens of different weapons to completely overwhelm his opponent. Ren’s third Over Soul with Bason, the Bushin Fish Fin, allowed him to summon lightning and electricity from the sky or channel it through his oversoul in close combat.
He gains the Spirit of Thunder after becoming one of the Five Elemental Warriors, which, according to Pascal Avaf, follows the Taoist path.
History
Tao Ren is a Chinese shaman from Guizhou. He was born on January 1, 1986, and is the Tao Family’s 43rd heir.
Coming to Tokyo
Ren traveled to Japan from China to fight Asakura Yoh and capture his guardian ghost Amidamaru, as he desired to become Shaman King and required a large number of powerful spirits. there is He ran into Manta as he was walking home from cram school through the cemetery and told him to inform Yoh that he would be taking Amidamaru.
Manta and Yoh later found him outside a restaurant, surrounded by a gang he had offended. The gangsters attack Ren, but he quickly defeats them with Wushu without the assistance of his guardian ghost, demonstrating his immense strength.
When one of the gangsters tried to run him over with a car, Ren unleashed Bason and performed Hyoui-Gattai, easily destroying the car. Ren decides to kill the gangster because he isn’t satisfied, but he is stopped by Yoh, who tells him “that was enough.”
Ren tells Yoh that people who cut their hearts for pleasure deserve to die, and that when he becomes the Shaman King, he will purify the world. He goes on to say that in order to do so, he’ll need a lot of strong spirits, and he asks Yoh to give him Amidamaru.
Yoh refuses, claiming Amidamaru was his best friend, and Ren engages in a battle with him. The fight is even until Ren, enthralled by Amidamaru’s strength, uses 100 percent acceptance, the ability to draw all of the spirit’s strength into the world, as Ren claims, and lands a fatal strike on Yoh.
Yoh, on the other hand, manages to rise after Ren stated that spirits were nothing more than tools, and that becoming friends with them would only encourage them to exploit the shaman.
Ren also stated that Amidamaru was his friend, and that he would rather send him to heaven than give him to Ren, where he would be treated as a mere tool. Ren becomes enraged and charges at Yoh, intent on killing him, but Amidamaru protects Yoh with his body.
Ren is taken aback by this, but he mocks Amidamaru’s action and strikes Yoh with 100 percent acceptance once more. Yoh, on the other hand, accepts Ren unconditionally, much to Ren’s surprise, and the two fight, with Ren losing. Ren stays in an abandoned Chinese restaurant that he bought from the previous owner after his defeat, still enraged by his first defeat and brooding over his failure to acquire Amidamaru, which he believes was due to Bason’s fault.
Shaman Fights in Tokyo
Ren was put to the test by the Patch Chrom during the Shaman Tournament qualification rounds. Ren was unsatisfied after quickly learning how to use his Over Soul and hitting Chrom, and attacked him furiously, killing him in the process. Ren arrogantly stated that no one could now doubt his new abilities and then walked away from the scene laughing at what he had done.
Ren intervened when Yoh was about to be attacked by Johann Faust VIII’s 12730-kilogram Skeleton giant, destroying the skeleton giant with a single kick, not wanting to kill his next opponent and showing Yoh his Over Soul. He revealed at the time that he had already won one fight, implying that he would have to defeat Yoh in order to advance to the tournament, as the time remaining in the Shaman Fight Preliminaries had expired.
Ren and Yoh reunite three months later, ready to fight each other. Ren tells Yoh that he will soon become an obstacle, recalling his humiliating defeat, but Yoh laughs and says that he, too, cannot afford to lose. Ren dismounts and tells Yoh that shamans like himself are worthless, but Yoh ignores him and points out that Ren has grown a little taller, infuriating him even more.
Ren attacked Yoh with his new oversoul as soon as the battle began, believing Yoh was treating him like a fool, but Yoh shielded the attacks.
Ren made a remark about Yoh’s new Over Soul and charged at him at breakneck speed. Ren goes behind Yoh and strikes him after surprising him with his barrage of attacks. Yoh, on the other hand, manages to block Ren’s hit with his back to him, surprising Ren.
Yoh hits Ren, sending him flying, and Amidamaru reveals that Yoh could only do this because he had his eyes. Ren is unharmed, and it was revealed that he had only used a tenth of his power. Ren rushes at Yoh, who only manages to defend himself before being launched into the air by Ren’s impact. Ren then rode his Over Soul into the air and attacked Yoh, which Yoh was able to block just in time.
Ren sarcastically asks Yoh if he thought his attack would end there, and Bason summons a massive fist that slams Yoh to the ground. Yoh uses his Over Soul to cushion the fall, but Ren continues to strike him, causing Yoh’s Over Soul to be broken.
Yoh deduces that in order to defeat Ren, he’ll need to create an oversoul that can overcome Ren’s, but he refuses to do so because he doesn’t know how. Amidamaru becomes concerned, but Yoh reassures him. Yoh’s words had an impact on me. Ren attacks Yoh with his Over Soul once more, enraged. Ren’s Over Soul, on the other hand, is countered and penetrated by Amidamaru, causing it to disintegrate.
Ren, enraged that Yoh managed to counter his attack, launches another Over Soul, but Yoh slants to the right and goes right under him, dodging the attack thanks to Amidamaru’s words. Ren becomes even more enraged, and he attacks Yoh once more, but Yoh dodges the attack and appears behind Ren, asking where he was looking before attacking and breaking Ren’s Over-Soul.
Ren then inquired about Yoh’s ability to avoid all of his attacks, but Yoh reveals that he had been hit, and that including his earlier attack, he had been hit four times and his Over Soul had been hit seven times. Yoh’s Over Soul was able to defeat Ren because Ren was too preoccupied with his anger to notice that his attacks were effective, according to Silva. Ren, who had complete faith in his power, was disturbed by Yoh’s calm demeanor even as he used up his power and attacked, and his faith, along with his Over-Soul, began to crumble.
Ren recalls his motivation for becoming Shaman King and decides to put an end to it all. He uses all of his spiritual power to materialize Bason’s entire upper body by placing the spirit of Bason’s horse inside his personal horse, Hei-Tao, and placing the spirit of Bason’s horse inside his personal horse, Hei-Tao.
He explains to Yoh that the world he was aiming for and the weight he was carrying were both beyond his comprehension.
He prepares to strike Yoh, who, knowing he couldn’t avoid it, does the same with Amidimaru, and the two clash, engulfing them in a massive cloud of dust. Ren’s Over-Soul was revealed to have completely vanished as the dust settled, and Ren realized that he had indeed lost.
Yoh, on the other hand, reveals that his Over Soul had also faded long ago, causing Ren to fall off his horse. The two begin to argue, and Silva intervenes, announcing that the fight has been called a draw. Ren demanded angrily how they were going to count the fight’s outcome, and Goldva appears out of nowhere, declaring that both of them had advanced to the preliminary round.
Ren then attends the Grand Shaman Fight’s opening ceremony and is later persuaded to attend a gathering at Yoh’s house by Usui Horokeu. Ren leaves the next day for China, telling Yoh that he only has one goal left in mind: to defeat him with a power greater than his, and then he departs.
Ren wishes to let go of his hatred and move on with his life as he becomes friends with Yoh and the others, so he returns to China to defeat his father. He and Bason were greeted by an army of Jiang Shi warriors who had been resurrected from Yan’s corpses. Ren quickly dispatches all of the Jiang Shi’s with only a minor hiccup until his father appears, which Ren did not notice until he announced his presence, and greets him with a Furyoku blast. Yan claims he expected both of his children to rebel against him.
Two Jiang Shis arrive with Tao Jun and the rest of Pyron. Yan then kidnaps Ren and imprisons him in the Tao dungeon for ten days of torture. Jun bemoans her misfortune, but Ren consoles her by quoting Yoh’s “It will work out.”
Yoh finally makes it to the dungeon and sets him free. Ren explains why he has to do this by stating that he has come to defeat the evil within himself. The two Jiang Shis in charge of the torture area arrive and kill both Jiang Shis. They return upstairs, where Yuan’s final bodyguard is about to murder Horhoro and Ryu.
The Jiang Shi sneaks up behind the two and uses one of Pyron’s moves to strike them. Manta, on the other hand, discovers that the final Jiang Shi was Pyron’s deceased master. Ren says that Yan probably placed the master’s ghost into a new body after the Jiang Shi reveals its face to them. only then The Jiang Shi pursues Yoh, but Pyron intervenes. Jun and Pyron cut it in half to take it down. The gang moves on and comes face to face with Yuan.
Yan’s arms are cut off by Ryu and Horohoro, but they grow back and are slammed down. Ren attacks Yan, but he is only dismembered, and Yuan survives. Yan attacks Ren, and Yoh takes the brunt of the blow. Pyron kicks Yan in the head, but Pyron is eventually thrown against a wall.
Ren begins to listen to his father for a short time, but he realizes that he is only doing so because he is weak. The gang stands up and confronts Yuan. Yuan becomes enraged when he learns that they are doing this for Ren. Yan attacks, but he easily dispatches Ren, revealing that Ren’s father was an Over Soul.
Yuan reveals his memorial tablet armor and transforms into a dragon. Ren triumphs over Yan in a battle of souls. Ren is finally able to let go of his hatred and try to do something positive for once.
Ren’s mother and grandfather appear and successfully prevent Yan from going any further. They invite the gang to dinner, and they enthusiastically accept. Ren informs his family that he must leave because of the shaman fight and that he will not be able to stay any longer. Ren receives the Bo-lei sword from his father as they depart. Ren promises to be by the boundless lands of China, as his father warns him.
Ren is next seen at the military base, where he attends a shaman gathering. He’s eating food that the Patch has provided for him. The group takes a break to talk to Hao. Horohoro is then attacked by the Spirit of Fire, who is caught by Ren. He, in turn, attacks Hao, but the Spirit of Fire intervenes.
Ren boards the plane, and when it vanishes, he explains that the test isn’t about how well the shamans fly, but about their ability to remain calm under duress. Meanwhile, outside in the sky, the group summons their souls and falls to the ground.
Traveling Through America
Ren, Yoh, Ryu, and Horohoro arrived safely on Route 66, and Ryu dispatched Billy to the nearest town. Ren, Yoh, Ryu, and Horohoro encountered Lilirara and learned about Patch Hao’s past. The next day, he ran into Lyserg. Lyserg then introduces himself and asks to join the group, to which Yoh greets him politely, much to the surprise of the Horohoro and Tao Ren.
Horohoro and Ren have a brief discussion about him, and Ryu notices that Horohoro addresses Lyserg as “he” and asks if Lyserg is a guy, to which Lyserg pulls down his pants, which freaks everyone out until Lyserg pulls them back up. Lyserg then goes on to explain his dowsing abilities before revealing Morphine, his guardian ghost.
Horohoro prepares his snowboard for an attack against Lyserg after a scuffle between the two, to which Lyserg shows off his Over Soul and strikes Horohoro, who barely dodges. Horohoro appears in front of Lyserg and reveals his own Over-Soul, but the Pendulum Over Soul appears next to him, and the pendulum tip is right in front of his face.
Ren prepares to cut the wire with his fully charged Over-Soul, but Lyserg quickly incapacitates both Ren and Horohoro by severing their mediums with the wire.
At the Patch Village’s entrance, the group would run into Boris Tepes Dracula and the rest of Hao’s followers. The group then encounters the X-Laws, who kill Boris and easily beat up “Big Guy” Bill Burton. They are about to murder Bill when Yoh intervenes, and Bill thanks them by showing them the rest of the way to Patch Village.
Second Round of the Shaman Fight
Ren entered Patch village with a boost in power, but unlike other people, he stared the Great Spirit in the eyes without passing out. Chocolove approached the group and informed Ren of the team’s stipulation. Ren quickly assembled his team, which included Chocolove McDonell and Horohoro.
He didn’t say anything to his team when he named them “the Ren.” They were put in charge of Hao’s Earth team. Chocolove was in charge of the majority of the battle. Ren took over when Chocolove’s power ran out, defeating the Earth team in a single blow. After Yoh’s match, Hao spoke with Ren and destroyed Ren’s guandao.
Ren did not like the idea of being trained by Asakura Yoh’s father, so he confronted him and was knocked out, revealing his new Bao-Lei sword Over-Soul in the process. Chocolove and Horohoro successfully repelled Hao’s followers for a while.
Ren made the decision to fight. Peyote Diaz, seeking vengeance for his earlier actions, pulled out the Calavera Phantasma and impaled Ren with the small knife it carried. Chocolove and Horohoro rushed in and quickly sealed Ren’s massive wound.
Yoh arrived and routed Hao’s mercenaries. Yoh had made a deal with Iron Maiden Jeanne to bring Ren back to life in exchange for Yoh dropping out of the tournament. Jeanne arrived, and after preparing a ceremony, she had Shamash kiss Ren, bringing him back to life, despite his disgust.
Invading the Plants
Ren and his companions enter the volcano plant and face Magna. Both Magnascope and Over Soul are used in their attacks. Magna shatters Jeanne’s Iron Maiden, but there was nothing inside. Ren leaps over souls and unleashes the full force of his lightning-based attacks on Magna.
Magna, on the other hand, employs the Patch Song and prepares to kill. After that, the fight begins, with both fighters constantly dodging or blocking the other’s attack. Suddenly, a large amount of smoke fills the space between them, which Magna uses to vanish and hide from Ren.
Ren appears out of nowhere to strike Ren, but vanishes before he can land a clean hit. Ren reappears behind Magna in the blink of an eye, explaining how he had become as fast as lightning. Magna suddenly realizes he needs to warn Nichrome, but he is killed by a massive lighting bolt, allowing Yoh and the company to move on to the next plant. [eight]
Ren and the other three teams find Nichrom, who quickly reveals his medium, spirit, and Over Souled Yellow Whip when they reach the 7th Plant of the Cave. He urged the group to attack him as a unit, but Ren only showed him his old weapon and taunted him into attacking him alone. Nichrom then used the scorpion tail to attack Ren, only for the tail to wrap itself around Bason’s arm and slam Nichrom to the ground.
Ren then uses 100% Hyoi Gattai to quickly attack Nichrom with the Zhong Hua Zhan Wu, leaving him bloody and his patch cloak tattered. Nichrom slowly awoke and attempted to attack Ren once more while insane, but Ren easily grabbed the scorpion tail by the broad himself.
Ren then tells Nichrom that if he doesn’t fight with all his might, he will perish. Nichrom throws away his tattered cloak and reveals a new Over Soul on his legs, made with the spirit of Purple Kick, as he absorbs Ren’s words. Nichrom thanks Ren for his words and reveals that he gains incredible speed with this new Over-Soul, allowing him to appear behind Ren and kick him into a wall.
Nichrom charges towards Ren, grabbing him with the claw of his Yellow Whip Over Soul and piercing his stomach with the broad of his scorpion tail. Ren learns from Nichrom that his body is dying from a poison that will not go away as long as he is alive.
Ren prepares his own Armour Over Soul after seeing Nichrom go all out, and the two of them have one final battle. The fight’s outcome is unknown, but Ren is later seen being patched up by Asakura Yoh with the spirit of Johann Faust VIII, implying that Ren won.
The party then travels to the Ocean’s 8th plant, where Thalim of the Ten Patch Officiants awaits them. Thalim greets them politely, recalling Yoh’s earlier tip at the Patch Cafe, and they appear to strike up a friendly conversation. Ren, on the other hand, is unfazed by this and quickly oversouls his Armour Over Soul and attacks Thalim with “ElecBang,” only to be blocked by a massive tree that grows up around Thalim.
Ren’s lightning is largely ineffective against him, Thalim reveals, as the tree simply disperses the electricity into the ground. Horohoro also fails against Thalim plants, but Thalim’s Climatic Over Soul ties Ren and Horohoro up. Chocolove finally defeats Thalim when he discovers the power of erosion.
When the group reaches the tenth and final “Plant of the Universe,” they discover that there is no oxygen and no gravity, and they begin to wonder how they will fight there. Lyserg initially suggests that they each protect themselves with their own personal O.S., but Ryu abruptly interrupts and suggests that they all use the heads of his “O.S. Yamato No Orochi” so that the rest of the team can fight at full strength.
Ren, when asked about the sudden responsibility, says that he wants to be useful as well, and that the seven is currently his best place. Despite their ability to fight at full strength, Rutherfor still defeats them until Yoh nullifies her Over-Soul.
When Hao finally wakes up, he sends the Oracle Bells a message that reads “‘so small.” With the exception of Rutherfor, Opacho, and Yoh, he arrives at the final plant and kills everyone with a single glance. Ren, Lyserg, Chocolove, and Horohoro, along with the Five Grand Elemental Spirits, appear in the Great Spirit after Hao tries to banish Yoh from his area. The Shaman King and the 5 Elemental Warriors engage in a fierce battle.
Finally, Hao reveals that he was only planning their demise and uses the Great Spirit to destroy a sun and create a black hole that nearly swallows the Five Warriors until the Soul Train arrives and anchors everyone. When Hao’s mother arrives and everyone is sent back, he is eventually dissuaded from his plan to destroy humanity.
Funbari no Uta
Ren studied at Tsinghua University after the tournament, and after graduating, he founded the Leidi Group with Bill Burton and Hang Zang-Ching, which began as a large electronics manufacturing company. Ren would become the CEO of the company as it grew into a conglomerate. 1st He met Iron Maiden Jeanne while she was traveling through Europe, and they eventually married and had a son, Tao Men. She went on maternity leave after giving birth to Men, leaving Ren as the leader of X-Charity.
Horohoro, Chocolove, and Lyserg are all surprised to see a horse-drawn carriage when they arrive for their reunion with Yoh and Anna. Ren bemoaned the fact that Tokyo was always dirty and that no matter where you went, there were always crowds and traffic jams, oblivious to the fact that he had caused the crowds and traffic jams himself.
Horohoro, Lyserg, and Chocolove all mistook the little boy for Ren until Ren himself emerged from the carriage and picked up the child, announcing that the boy was his son, Tao Men.
Horohoro asks Ren who the mother of the child is while waiting for Yoh and Anna, but Ren refuses to answer. Lyserg, on the other hand, claims to have already figured out who it was. When Ryu arrived and informed Ren that Yoh and Anna had been delayed, Ren became enraged and yelled, causing all three of his hair spikes to grow.
As they wait for Yoh and Anna, they recall the end of their fight with Hao and realize that nothing has changed despite their promise to him, only to be encouraged by Yoh, who has just arrived. After the greeting, they all return to the party, where Ren, enraged, attacks Horohoro at the end. Later that night, Anna receives a package from the Patch Village, which she opens to reveal is a book about the Shaman Fights that occurred in Tokyo.
