Sam Roland Heughan was born on April 30, 1980, in Balmaclellan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire. Heughan and his older brother Cirdan were named after characters from The Lord of the Rings by his parents, who were members of Gandalf’s Garden, a London hippy commune highly influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.

Chrissie Heughan struggled to raise the two boys when their father abandoned them when they were both young. Heughan transferred to Kells Primary School in neighboring New Galloway when he was five years old. He lived in refurbished stables on the grounds of Kenmure Castle during this time.
