Short story of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
|Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted boy who makes living selling charcoal in Taisho-era Japan. His tranquil life is shattered, however, when a Demon slaughters his entire family.
Nezuko, his younger sister, is the only one who has survived, but she has been transformed into a Demon as well! Tanjiro embarks on a perilous quest to restore his sister’s health and destroy the Demon who has ruined his life.
Who is Sakonji Urokodaki?
Sakonji Urokodaki is a retired member of the Demon Slayer Corps, having held the position of the previous Water Hashira. He is the main cultivator of Water Breathing, having trained Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro Kamado, Sabito and Makomo.
Voice Actor of Sakonji Urokodaki
In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Brook Chalmers provides the English dub voice for Sakonji Urokodaki, while Hōchū Ōtsuka provides the Japanese voice.
Sakonji’s face is never revealed or depicted throughout the entire manga; he is always seen wearing a tengu mask that covers his entire face, despite Tanjiro claiming that Sakonji’s face is very gentle and calm through a Taisho secret. He has silver-colored hair and appears to be an elderly man, as evidenced by the large number of students he has trained. His hair was black and styled into a topknot when he was younger.
He always wears a cloud-patterned jinbei kimono with navy colored pants with white kyahan guards fastened at his shins. He also wears black tabi socks and sandals that are similar to Tanjiro’s, but his have blue straps. When Sakonji travels, he wears a white cloth around his neck that covers his head and wraps around his neck.
While he appears to be a stern, grumpy old man at first (and he is when it comes to teaching), he has a very compassionate personality. He is one of the few Demon Slayer Corps characters who fully trusts Nezuko to never eat a human, despite the fact that he pushes his students hard. Similarly, he has complete faith in Tanjiro’s ability to restore her humanity.
Sakonji’s past is unknown, but he was a Demon Slayer in his youth and was also responsible for the capture of the Hand Demon. He would then become the Water Hashira for an unknown amount of time before retiring to become one of the Water Breathing swordsmen cultivators.
Arc of Rehabilitation Training
Sakonji writes a letter to Kagaya Ubuyashiki after the Demon Slayer Corps discovers Nezuko’s existence. He asked for Tanjiro Kamado’s forgiveness for harboring a Demon and explained Nezuko’s peculiar circumstances in it. He also stated that if Nezuko kills a human, he, Tanjiro, and Giyu will all commit Seppuku to repentance.
Arc of Infinity Castle
While Tanjiro and the remaining Hashira fought Muzan and the remaining Kizuki in the Infinity Castle, Sakonji was summoned to the Butterfly Mansion to protect Nezuko, who Muzan is now after because of her newfound resistance to sunlight. He also gave her Tamayo’s cure, which would transform her back into a human and thwart Muzan’s plans. Sakonji reflected on everything that had happened since he met her and Tanjiro while tending to her as she became ill as a result of taking the cure, and told both of them not to lose hope.
Abilities and power
Enhanced Sense of Smell: Sakonji’s enhanced sense of smell allows him to detect the ‘line of interval,’ a slight pause in an enemy’s movement that allows an opening to strike, as well as distinguish between species and their approximate location.
This is revealed when Giyu Tomioka writes to Sakonji, requesting that he train Tanjiro because he shares the cultivator’s ability. Urokodaki was able to smell out Tanjiro’s emotions and smell “the scent of innate Kindness” from him during his battle against the Temple Demon, and this was further demonstrated during his first meeting with him during his battle against the Temple Demon.
Sakonji is the primary instructor of the Water Breathing Breathing Style. He has taught Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka, the successor to his former position as Water Hashira, ten breathing techniques. Controlling one’s breathing pattern allows the user to increase the amount of oxygen in their blood. This raises his strength and agility to that of a Demon. It is currently unknown what level of skill he possessed while using this style, but as a former Hashira, he was likely a formidable swordsman.
