Richard Allen Jefferson was born in Los Angeles, California on June 21, 1980. Meekness LeCato and Richard Jefferson Sr., his parents, were Christian missionaries. As a result, they relocated from one location to another rather frequently.

Jefferson graduated from Moon Valley High School in Phoenix, Arizona. He led his high school basketball team to the 4A State Championship during his senior year.
