Basketball coach Pokey Chatman developed an interest in sports at a young age. During her high school career, she was a point guard who hit the first three-point shot.
Following her brief basketball career, Pokey decided to pursue a coaching career in 1991. She began as an assistant coach until 1993, when she was promoted to associate head coach.
When Sue Gunter went on medical leave, she was given the opportunity to serve as an interim coach. Pokey led the Tigers to their first-ever final four appearance. Sue, however, was given credit for their victory.
Despite this, Pokey was named the fourth head coach in school history. She was a member of the LSU Hall of Fame for 18 years and earned a salary of $400,000, which added to her net worth.
Pokey returned to Hahnville High School, where she began her basketball career, on April 1, 2015. She gave the students encouraging advice on how to advance their basketball careers.
