Nix was a high school football player at Etowah High School in Attalla, Alabama. After that, he went on to play quarterback for Auburn University’s Tigers. He filled in for an injured Stan White against Alabama during his sophomore season in 1993, helping the Tigers to an 11–0 record. Nix was the school’s career passing efficiency leader when he graduated in 1995. Nix played for current Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher, as well as Auburn head coach Terry Bowden, offensive coordinator Tommy Bowden, and quarterbacks coach Jimbo Fisher. Nix holds the Auburn passing record for most pass completions in a game with 34 against Arkansas.
