Matt Ryan Leaves as John Constantine in ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ but It’s Not the Final Goodbye!

The enigmatic John Constantine has finally hung his trademark trench coat after seven years’ worth of exploits in DC’s TV universe, popularly known as the Arrowverse.

Matt Ryan “trench-coat wearing nasty piece of work” perished in the August 29, 2021 installment of the Arrowverse spinoff series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, when his contract with Raffi Barsoumian’s character turned sour.

Catching Up!

Rounding up the events of the ongoing season thus far, Bishop had given Constantine his word that he would create a serum that would trick the Fountain of Imperium, which was apparently an alien charged with protecting Earth from invasive alien species, into deeming Ryan’s character worthy of drinking from it.

As clear from the most recent episode, Bishop double-crossed the time traveler and tainted the serum with a terrible poison that would ultimately kill him. In his final moments, Constantine was seen exchanging a heartfelt farewell with Olivia Swann’s Astra and Tala Ashe’s Zari 2.0 before the fountain eventually devoured him.

Matt Ryan Was Happy with the Farewell

Ryan shared that the show had covered all that it could with his character, save from letting him go off on his own adventures again. He added, That didn’t feel like, “Oh sucks, guy, they took it away from me,” or anything. ‘This feels proper to put John to bed,’ it was like.

He went on to say that he was pleased with the way the authors handled Constantine’s farewell. He remembered a scenario from episode thirteen in which his character was brutally thrashing a bleeding version of himself.

“With the way we filmed it and the blood and everything, I almost felt like I was back on the original show. I think the writers did a fantastic job with that “he stated

Nonetheless, the actor did not rule out the possibility of re-wearing the trench coat. Ryan told TVLine that he was open to the concept of producing a crossover episode in the future if the studio need “multiverse John” to return. He pictured himself as an elderly man with a walking stick and a cigarette, recreating the part.

Not Matt Ryan’s Last Season

Fans of the character might grieve Constantine’s untimely demise. However, if it is only Ryan they admire, then need not fret since the actor will put on a different character for the forthcoming season seven of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

During a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2021, it was revealed that Ryan would be returning as a completely new character titled Dr. Gwyn Davies. His revised character description paints him out as “an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who may prove to be a key ally for the chaotic time-travelers.” Although Ryan liked playing the legendary character in both the NBC series Constantine and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, he told Entertainment Weekly that it was time to hang the coat.
