The beginning of Maroon 5
When Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick were still in high school, they formed the pop band Kara’s Flowers.
Adam was the band’s lead singer, Jesse was the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Mickey was the bassist, and Ryan was the drummer. The name of the band was changed to Maroon 5 after guitarist James Valentine joined the group.
Their journey began in 2002 with the commercial and critical success of their debut single, “Harder to Breathe.” The song appeared on their debut album, “Songs About Jane.” The album eventually peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. The album’s singles, “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved,” however, were both huge international hits.
Evolution of Maroon 5
Ryan Dusick, the band’s drummer, left in 2006, and was replaced by Matt Flynn, who had been touring with them for the previous two years. The band’s second studio album, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long,” was released in 2007 and featured Matt for the first time. The album not only topped the Billboard 200 charts in the United States, but it also sold nearly 430,000 copies in the first seven days after its release.
They received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals in 2008 for their single “If I Never See Your Face Again,” which featured Rihanna. PJ Morton joined the band in 2010. He joined the group as an official member after filling in for Jesse Carmichael, who took a break from 2012 to 2014.
They re-released their third studio album, “Hands All Over,” in 2011 with the massive hit single “Moves Like Jagger.” Not only was the song a critical hit, but it also topped the charts in over 18 countries. Likewise, the song’s music video was well received, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
They released the album “Overexposed” in 2012, and the singles “Payphone” and “One More Night” charted at #2 and #1, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They released the single “Daylight” the same year, which topped the Mainstream Top 40 charts.
Jesse Carmichael rejoined the band in 2014, bringing the total number of members to six. In the same year, they released the album “V,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.
The album’s lead single, “Sugar,” was a huge hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and earning a Grammy nomination. Sam Farrar, who had been touring with the band for the previous four years, became an official member of the band a few years later, in 2016.
In 2017, they released the album “Red Pill Blues,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The album’s lead single, “Girls Like You,” was remixed and charted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 the following year. Mickey Madden, the band’s bassist, left in 2020, making Maroon 5 a six-member band.
