He studied swimming at the University of Calgary and competed in the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, in 1988. As a member of Canada’s relay team, he won a silver medal in the competition.
For many years, Mark was regarded as one of the world’s best backstrokers. During the relay event in Barcelona, he finished fourth in the world and was featured on the cover of Time magazine.
He became the first Canadian to win gold in swimming since the Communist-banned 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
